Top Ten Tuesday is hosted by The Broke and the Bookish, and this week we’re talking about the authors whose books we will snap up as soon as they become available, no quarter given, no mercy shown. This was a difficult list for me because while there are some authors that I will always, always read, a couple have let me down in the past. I’ve decided to leave those on the list though, because I have hope!
Obviously. I still need to work up the courage to read The Casual Vacancy though.
2. Rachel Vincent
I’ve been a fan of Rachel’s books since the Shifters series, and I’ve since read everything that she has brought out. Admittedly, I was disappointed in The Stars Never Rise, but I’m willing to forgive that slight mishap and continue to buy and read all of her books.
3. V. E. Schwab
There’s a difference between V. E. Schwab, whose books have been awesome (I gave Vicious 5 stars and ADSOM 4), and Victoria Schwab, whose books were just “good”. I’ve made the distinction because I think Victoria’s writing works better with adult novels, and her adult books aren’t over-saturated with romance.
Of course, I’ve only read three books from Lynch so far. Those are the three books in the Gentleman Bastards series, and they are AMAZING. I think Lynch is a really talented writer, and I love his world building. He does such a good job of writing a fantasy world which treats women as equals, and nobody asks any questions. And of course we have the epic ship that is JeanLocke. I really hope Lynch comes out with more books after the GB series is over. I will definitely be reading them!
5. Brandon Sanderson
I’ve told a small white lie here as I won’t be continuing with his Calamity YA series (Steelheart was awful), but I am willing to give anything else a try if Sanderson writes it. I also love that all of his adult fantasy is connected in some way, even if we don’t know exactly how yet. I LOVE STUFF LIKE THAT.
6. Tess Sharpe
I’ve only read one book by Tess Sharpe, which was her debut Far From You. It was absolutely epic and I sobbed into my pillow after finishing it. I also follow her on Twitter and I kind of love her, so I’ll be holding my breath until she brings out another book.
I LOVE ROBIN TALLEY. She released her debut novel, Lies We Tell Ourselves, last year and it was FLAWLESS. The main characters of her books are all LGBTQ+, and there is always so much more going on than the characters discovering their sexualities. For example, LWTO was set in 1950’s Virginia, and one of the main characters is one of the first black teenagers to join a previously all white school. Her next book features a genderqueer character and the one after that will be Macbeth meets Mean Girls with a lesbian main couple. Basically, YOU NEED ROBIN TALLEY IN YOUR LIFE.
8. Robinson Wells
I was a little hesitant to put Wells on this list because I’ve only read three books by him, and one of them had the worst ending. BUT, I really enjoyed his books regardless, and I think he has a captivating and thrilling writing style. He writes really great mysteries as well, so I can’t wait to read more by him!
Despite the disappointment that I experienced over the finale to the Burn for Burn series, I HAD to put Jenny Han on this list because she writes adorable romance and adorable main characters. Reeve and Lillia and Lara Jean and Peter FOREVER.*draws love hearts*
10. Gillian Flynn
And, finally, I couldn’t NOT put Flynn on this list. The woman is the best at writing dark and evil characters, which is exactly what you need sometimes. I read all her books last year, pretty much one after the other, because I couldn’t get enough. Dark Places was the best, in my opinion, but Gone Girl and Sharp Objects are also AWESOME. And creepy as hell. GIVE ME ALL HER BOOKS! She’s also writing the entire season of Utopia, which will be on HBO, so I also have that to look forward to.
OMG, Gillian Flynn made my list too!! She is amazing at writing twisted characters and dark mysteries. Dark Places is my favorite as well!! And I have had Lies we tell ourselves on my Kindle FOREVER!!! Hopefully I can get to it soon.
I love everything by Schwab, but I also think I prefer her adult books. ADSOM blew me away.
I am unsure if I could come up with 10 auto-buy authors. But from your list, I have only read from JK Rowling. One of my favorites is Patrick Ness. He hasn’t disappointed me yet 🙂
