The Girlfriend is more of a soap than a thriller, which surprised me because it had been pushed so hard as the next big thing. I felt like I was watching an episode of Footballer’s Wives or something because of all the family drama that was going on. I have to be honest, I didn’t particularly enjoy this one. I didn’t hate it either, and I kept reading it because it kind of captivated me, but I didn’t really like it. It’s a tough one.
My main problem was that I didn’t like any of the characters. None of them were nice people, but none of them were particularly interesting to read about either, which could have saved them from boring me to death. The most irritating character was Cherry, the girlfriend. I think the author was trying to go for an Amy vibe, but Cherry is so not Amy. She was frustrating more than anything.
I think having the dual point of view took away any of the mystery for me. I think if the author had taken out Cherry’s POV then it would have been a lot more interesting. But instead it was just disappointing.
