Series enders are always difficult to take in, especially when they’re the end of my favourite series or trilogies. The Unbound trilogy is one of my favourites, and the reason it took me so long to read the final book is that I didn’t want to be disappointed. The first and second books are so amazing, and I wanted the trilogy to end on a high note. Sadly, everything must come to an end (and all that) and I eventually picked this one up. And even more sadly, it didn’t live up to my expectations.
Don’t get me wrong, I liked the book well enough. But it didn’t live up to the hype that I had created in my mind. I guess I had gotten myself all worked up about this trilogy after adoring the first two books and I was expecting nothing less than greatness.
I think my main issue was that I couldn’t connect with the characters. I didn’t like the guy, Kris, and I was only lukewarm towards Sera. I think their characters could have used more development and certainly more distinction. And the build up to their romance was awful. All of a sudden they were in love with each other. At least in the previous two books, the characters had somewhat of a history. Or at least they had development that felt sincere, whereas here Kris kidnaps Sera and falls in love with her because of a prophecy.
I still love the setting and the world-building. The whole thing with the powers and the crime lords and the syndicates is as enticing as it was in the first book. I could probably read a dozen more books set in this world. But the characters let me down to no end and the world-building wasn’t enough to make me rate this book higher.
