Ironskin by Tina Connolly
Ironskin #1
Release Date: October 2, 2012
Publisher: Tor Books

Goodreads Stars: 2
Rating: Bland
It’s the only way to contain the fey curse that scars her cheek. The Great War is five years gone, but its scattered victims remain—the ironskin.
When a carefully worded listing appears for a governess to assist with a “delicate situation”—a child born during the Great War—Jane is certain the child is fey-cursed, and that she can help.
Teaching the unruly Dorie to suppress her curse is hard enough; she certainly didn’t expect to fall for the girl’s father, the enigmatic artist Edward Rochart. But her blossoming crush is stifled by her own scars, and by his parade of women. Ugly women, who enter his closed studio…and come out as beautiful as the fey.
This was disappointing. I had heard good things about Ironskin before it was released, but once it came out the rating on Goodreads started to slowly decline. I ignored that – mostly – and was quite excited when I finally got to it this month, given the enticing premise. Alas, it fell flat.
Janus Vielle Aragones says
“Their ‘relationship’ was too rushed, and dull, and I didn’t understand why she felt so drawn to him considering he was hardly even there! ” – my sentiments exactly! I really don’t get it.
Nice, honest review. 🙂

Thanks! 🙂 I’m glad I’m not alone in thinking that, especially since their counterparts are such a well known duo.

This is the reason why I haven’t trad this.. some loved it others not much. I think IRONSKIN has that “high fantasy” feel to it whose charm eludes some of us regular readers.

It’s definitely getting a lot of mixed reviews. Such a shame, because the idea is really interesting!

I can’t work out if I am a fan of Jane Eyre or not (probably not) so the steampunk elements are the only real aspect of this story that appealed to me. It doesn’t sound like it is worth trying now though… Most people have rated this between 2 and 3 stars, it seems. Sorry it disappointed, Amber! Great review, though. 🙂

Thanks, Sam! The ratings for this are definitely towards the negative end of the spectrum. Shame!
