The Raven Cycle (Re)Readathon: Kick Off

Aloha! So, we’re finally kicking this thing off. It feels kind of surreal to me because Bec and I have been planning the (re)readathon for so long that I was kind of starting to feel like it wasn’t really happening. But it is! IT IS! We’re here and we’re getting this show on the road. Welcome to the (re)readathon, one and all! If you haven’t signed up yet, there is still time. Seriously. Carry on signing up because you will want to read this series!

Here’s what you’ll need to know about the (re)readathon:

General Info

  • We’ll be reading BOTH books together, starting today with The Raven Boys. There will be a schedule that you can stick to, but if you choose not to stick to it then that’s ok. Just beware of spoilers, whether you’re the one who could possibly share them because you read too fast (you speedy ninja, you) or you’re the one who could possibly be spoilt because you read more slowly than everybody else (it’s okay, you cute little tortoise).
  • You might be wondering if there is any other way to get involved, aside from simply reading along and taking part in the chats. And our answer is YES!!! You can create your own posts, fangirl all over social media, record some videos while you talk to the ravens near your home… whatever you like! We would love it, and if you use the #trcreadathon hashtag then we’ll be able to fangirl along with you.

Twitter Chats

  • At the end of each book, there will be a Twitter chat. We’ll be able to discuss the books and all the feels on Twitter using the hashtag #TRCReadathon
  • The Twitter Chat for The Raven Boys will be on September 27, 2014 at 7PM AEST/10AM GMT/5AM EST
  • The Twitter Chat for The Dream Thieves will be on October 17, 2014 at 5AM AEST/8PM GMT/3PM EST

The Raven Boys Reading Schedule

As you can see, it’s going to be fairly relaxed. We’re not going to be rushing through the book, so you should have time to read with us even if you have a busier schedule! We’ll be officially sharing the schedule for The Dream Thieves later on in September, but if you’re impatient or would like to plan out your reading well in advance, you can check it out here.

Event Schedule

We have a jam packed schedule for this event, so there will never be a dull moment. Posts will be going up alternatively on Books of Amber and Readers in Wonderland, and there’s a whole bunch of stuff coming up. Take a look below to have your interests (hopefully) piqued:

August 28: The almighty kick off post including all the information you will ever need.
September 4: Reasons to Read ‘The Raven Cycle’ @ Books of Amber
September 11: What bloody genre is this? @ Readers in Wonderland
September 18: Halfway point!
September 25: ‘Which Raven Boy Are You?’ quiz @ Books of Amber
September 27: ‘The Raven Boys’ Twitter chat
September 28: ‘The Raven Boys’ Wrap Up

October 2: A special edition of ‘X Marks the Spot!’ @ Readers in Wonderland
October 9: Halfway point!
October 16: Guest Post: Queer representation in The Raven Cycle @ Books of Amber
October 17: ‘The Dream Thieves’ Twitter Chat
October 19: Q&A with Maggie Stiefvater on Tumblr
October 20: ‘Blue Lily, Lily Blue’ Speculation Post @ Books of Amber & Readers in Wonderland
October 21: ‘The Dream Thieves’ and Event Wrap Up

Whew! I told you, it’s a lot. We’re hoping we’ve balanced it out properly so that we keep everyone entertained, but also haven’t gone too overboard because we need time to actually, you know, read the books.

Weekly Ravenagram

While brainstorming with Bec about what else we could include to make this event ridiculous and fun, we came up with the idea for a weekly challenge. We challenge you to post a photo as if you were one of the Raven Cycle characters posting on Instagram! We’ll be choosing a different character each week to keep it interesting, so you don’t have to worry about which character you are going to choose. You can pretend to be them all!

For example, for week one we might pick Gansey. It’ll be up to you to post one photo (or two or ten!) either on your blog, your Twitter, or your Instagram, as though you were him. Gansey might post a photo of the Pig, or give us a glimpse of his research, don’t you think? And obviously he would include the #trcreadathon hashtag so everyone could see it.

And posting these photos isn’t just for fun, they might also gain you extra entries in a giveaway!

Scavenger Hunt: The Hunt for the Crown

This is the thing that took up a huge amount of our time during our planning sessions, but I think it’s going to be the thing that I ultimately enjoy the most!

As you know (or you will soon), Gansey is hunting for Glendower, a Welsh King. Well, did you know that Glendower, according to some sources, may have been crowned with a second crown? The thing is, no one knows where it could be for sure. So it’s up to you guys to help us figure it out!

Starting from next week, you will be able to find a clue that’s hidden in every post. You will have to get your Sherlock on to try and find it, because if we were to point it out then that would be too easy. What I will tell you is that the clue (or clues, plural) will spell out the name of a place.

We understand that this quest will take many hours of your time and research skills. You will probably want to pull a Gansey and gets out some maps and chug down the coffee. So we thought we should give you an incentive since you’re being so helpful! At the end of the readathon, those who think they have figured out the location of the mysterious second crown will be entered into an exclusive giveaway. What is the prize, you ask? You will get the chance to win your choice of two books in the series, and something Chainsaw related!

Okay, this is where things get even crazier. We’ll be hosting four giveaways over the entire course of the readathon, which is slightly insane but who cares?

#TRCReadathon Participants’ Giveaway #1

Who can enter? Participants of the readathon, obviously.
US/CAN Prize: The original BLLB book plate art (*screams*) and a copy of Blue Lily, Lily Blue.
INT Prize: One book of your choice from TRC, and a BLLB book plate.
Dates: From right this second until October 21
Extra entries? OUI! Take part in the weekly challenges, post extra Raven Boys stuff, share on Twitter and things.

a Rafflecopter giveaway

Scavenger Hunt: The Hunt for the Crown Giveaway

Who can enter? People who have discovered the location of the second crown.
Open internationally
Prize: Two books of their choice from The Raven Cycle, and a Chainsaw toy. Because everyone needs a Chainsaw.
Dates: October 21, 2014 – November 4, 2014
Extra entries? Nope.

And there is still time to join!

You can join in with the readathon at any time during the event by entering your details into the linky below. If you have signed up already then you do not need to enter your details into the new linky – it’s only for the newcomers! All of the old data is still saved, it’s just that Linky Tools was being ridiculous so we had to create something new.

Also, I feel like I’ve missed stuff out so you should probably expect this post to be updated at some point.

I couldn’t get the new linky to work, so I signed up on the old one. SO EXCITED! I just realized that I never got around to reading The Dream Thieves even though I read and really liked Raven Boys, so thanks for hosting this :)
