For the final day of the Debutathon, I wanted to showcase some debut authors from last year. A lot of them have continued writing and many have more than two books already released! Seriously, the 2013 crowd are writing machines. Hopefully by this time next year, I’ll be able to talk about some newly released books from some of my favourite debut authors of this year!
Jennifer Rush crashed onto the scene with her debut novel, Altered, and has since released the sequel, Erased, and a bunch of novellas, along with a Middle Grade series titled Bot Wars. Altered was one of my favourite books of the year last year, and so I’ve been enjoying following Jenn’s writing journey. I am beyond excited for the release of Reborn since a) the cover is blue, and b) it’s a book about Nick.
Reborn will be released on January 6, 2015
I like to tell the story of how West’s debut, Pivot Point, was my first read of 2013 and also one of my favourites. It’s a truly remarkable story about alternate timelines and it kicked off my love for science fiction again last year. I mentioned that the 2013 authors were a bunch of cyborgs, right? Well, Kasie West has since released the series finale to Pivot Point, Split Second, as well as two contemporary novels called The Distance Between Us and On the Fence. Now we are all eagerly waiting for the release of her next contemporary, The Fill-In Boyfriend! She has also announced two other books in a new contemporary series.
The Fill-In Boyfriend will be released on May 5, 2015.
Amie Kaufman is an Australian author who wrote a fantastic debut that swept every sci-fi fan off their feet. It was called These Broken Stars and you might have heard of it? Now everybody is anticipating the release of the companion novel, This Shattered World, which is out this month, as well as the third and currently untitled novel set in the same universe. At least, I think it’s in the same universe. Who knows with sci-fi? Anyway, people freaked the frick out a little while ago because it was announced that Kaufman was teaming up with Jay Kristoff (The Lotus Wars) to work on a new science fiction trilogy.
Illuminae will be released on August 4, 2015
Arclight by Josin L. McQuein was another favourite debut of mine last year. Mostly because I shipped a ship so freakin’ hard, and it turned out that it sort of happened. But only sort of. Which means I need to hurry up and read the sequel, Meridian, which was released this year, to see if my ship is endgame. NO ONE SPOIL ME, SPOIL ME AND DIE. *cough* Anyway, McQuein is currently working on two new novels. The first is said to be similar to The Fugitive, and the other is about The Illuminati. Which is funny, because Illuminati backwards spells out Premeditated, and that’s the title of McQuein’s standalone novel from last year.
Who were your favourite debut authors of last year? And do you know what they’re working on now? I would love to know, especially if there’s a series that I should be getting into. I plan on starting ACID very soon. As soon as I’m out of this reading slump. Damn you, Bellamy Blake.

I like Altered very much. I must read the next book. I hope I can still connect with the characters.

I am always excited for more Kasie West. She is the best! But oh my god! I didn’t know she has two other contemporary books. *pumping my fist*
I am sooo ready for Illuminae. It sounds so cool, and SCI-FI! YES PLEASE.
