I picked some of my favourite quotes that have stuck with me over the years for this week’s topic. They’re all important to me in different ways and some have really shaped the way I look at the world. They’re not really in any order because lol organisation.
If you stumble about believability, what are you living for? Love is hard to believe, ask any lover. Life is hard to believe, ask any scientist. God is hard to believe, ask any believer. What is your problem with hard to believe? – Life of Pi, Yann Martel
Love is a temporary madness, it erupts like volcanoes and then subsides. And when it subsides, you have to make a decision. You have to work out whether your roots have so entwined together that it is inconceivable that you should ever part. Because this is what love is. Love is not breathlessness, it is not excitement, it is not the promulgation of promises of eternal passion, it is not the desire to mate every second minute of the day, it is not lying awake at night imagining that he is kissing every cranny of your body. No, don’t blush. I am telling you some truths. That is just being “in love”, which any fool can do. Love itself is what is left over when being in love has burned away, and this is both an art and a fortunate accident. – Captain Corelli’s Mandolin, Louis de Bernieres
Chiron had said once that nations were the most foolish of mortal inventions. “No man is worth more than another, wherever he is from.” – The Song of Achilles, Madeline Miller
There, peeping above the cloud-wrack above a dark tower high up in the mountains, Sam saw a white star twinkle for a while. The beauty of it smote his heart, as he looked up out of the forsaken land, and hope returned to him. For like a shaft, clear and cold, the thought pierced him that in the end the Shadow was only a small and passing thing: there was light and high beauty for ever beyond its reach. – The Return of the King, J.R.R. Tolkien
And this, even more wonderful and mysterious, is also true: when I read it, when I read what Julie’s written, she is instantly alive again, whole and undamaged. With her words in my mind while I’m reading, she is as real as I am. Gloriously daft, drop-dead charming, full of bookish nonsense and foul language, brave and generous. She’s right here. Afraid and exhausted, alone, but fighting. Flying in silver moonlight in a plane that can’t be landed, stuck in the climb—alive, alive, ALIVE. – Code Name Verity, Elizabeth Wein
I wanted you to see what real courage is, instead of getting the idea that courage is a man with a gun in his hand. It’s when you know you’re licked before you begin, but you begin anyway and see it through no matter what. – To Kill a Mockingbird, Harper Lee
Sizewise, she’s always been just smaller than me.
But I think of her and I feel like she’s as big as the world. – Monsters of Men, Patrick Ness
Maybe girls need an island to find themselves. Maybe they need a place where no one’s watching them so they can be who they really are.”
There was something about the island that made the girls forget who they had been. All those rules and shalt nots. They were no longer waiting for some arbitrary grade. They were no longer performing. Waiting. Hoping.
They were becoming.
They were. – Beauty Queens, Libba Bray
I took a deep breath and listened to the old brag of my heart. I am, I am, I am. – The Bell Jar, Sylvia Plath
He couldn’t know that at this very moment, people meeting in secret all over the country were holding up their glasses and saying in hushed voices: “To Harry Potter – the boy who lived! – Harry Potter and The Philosopher’s Stone, J.K. Rowling
