Halloween is one of my favourite times of the year, and I really love watching horror movies, spooky TV episodes, and reading creepy stories throughout the month. I think it’s a fantastic holiday because it brings out the creativity in people, and everyone can bond over their love for tales!
On the Page
I started this series early on this year, and it’s fabulous! There are several different main characters, but the first two books are told from the point of view of Elena, the only female werewolf in the world. Not the most original concept, but Armstrong has a gift for writing loveable characters. If you’re looking for werewolves, witches, ghosts, demons, or more, then this series is for you.
2. The Unbecoming of Mara Dyer by Michelle Hodkin
Want a thrilling novel with an unreliable narrator? OF COURSE YOU DO. Mara Dyer (so far) is one of my favourite trilogies, and the grand finale is out in just a few days, so you don’t have long to catch up so you can freak out with everyone else!
3. Dark Places by Gillian Flynn
I’ve read all three of Flynn’s books, and Dark Places is the best so far. The mystery was very well done and it was completely captivating. And I didn’t hate every single character! Success.
4. The Saga of Darren Shan by Darren Shan
I’ve loved this series since I was eleven. It’s one of the most well thoughtout series I have ever read. Cirque du Freak starts with the main character, Darren, as a boy, and the Saga follows him as he grows up and matures, and the writing matures along with him. It’s fantastic.
This wasn’t my favourite book, but I think everybody should read it for the magnificent style that Bray writes in. The Diviners is set in the 1920’s, and the writing completely fits the setting. There is a very creepy murderer on the loose, which makes this a great Halloween read.
6. Past Midnight by Mara Purnhagen
I read this one years ago, but I remember really enjoying it. It’s a ghost story, and it’s one of the few that actually managed to scare me.
On my list: The Girl from the Well, The House of Dead Maids, I Hunt Killers, The Monstrumologist.
On the Screen
1. Scream
2. Urban Legend
3. Supernatural (Seasons 1 – 5)
4. Penny Dreadful
5. Saw
6. Dawn of the Dead
The Diviners! Those parts with Naughty John creeped me out. I really don’t like scary movies, but I don’t mind books. I’ve seen one episode from Penny Dreadful and it was so weird, haha, I still don’t know what to think about it. Saw *uuuugh* Disgusting movies.
Haha right?! Naughty John’s parts were the best and the creepiest. Penny Dreadful is definitely weird, but SO GOOD. Needs more Josh Hartnett though. Josh/Dorian forever.
The Diviners has everything I love, so I tried to read it earlier this month (with the intention of finishing by Halloween), but it’s just incredibly slow. I had to stop reading because of deadlines.
YES at Scream! Such a classic 90s movie. I’m getting so nostalgic for them.
Bitten is on my TBR list. I’m looking for a new paranormal series to fall in love with.
I love Scream and Urban Legend. I really need to read the Mara Dyer series. I own the first two but just haven’t gotten around to reading them yet. Great list! Happy Halloween!
SAW is the ultimate creepy halloween movie for sure!
I’ve just started season 1 of Supernatural on Netflix. I like Dean’s sense of humor and the weird back story and what is up with Sam’s powers? Scream is a good scary movie. I would also choose Dracula. And The Wizard of Oz. It scared me so much when I was little it is still a bit of a horror movie to me!
Oh my! I am SO not a horror movie fan. Just your gifs freaked me out!! 🙂
