Even though most of the novel was set in one place, that didn’t stop it from being action packed. I liked the action in The Prey a lot more than I liked it in The Hunt. I think that’s because I felt more connected to the characters, and I was more interested in what they were doing as a result.
I’m very impressed by the character development of Gene in this novel. I felt a much bigger connection with him in this book than I did in The Hunt, and I think a great deal of that has to do with the fact that Gene is spending more time around humans, and is learning to express emotions.
I feel very ‘meh’ about Sissy, though. She was just very bland to me, and I didn’t feel much for her one way or the other. Also, I cannot stop laughing at her name. Whenever Sissy was mentioned I almost burst into childish giggles, because it’s just a ridiculous name and honestly it makes her sound like a wimp. Oops.
The very best thing about this novel was the new discoveries the characters made regarding the creatures. We learn how they were created, and how they took over the Earth. It was all very intriguing, and I adore it when authors can explain these things well, and Andrew Fukuda did a great job with it. There were a couple of twists in there as well, which I thoroughly enjoyed, although I had suspected that they would come around!
I’m dying to read the sequel because the ending of this one blew my mind. What the hell is going to happen next?! I have no clue. For all I know Gene could be eaten by one of the predators.
The Prey certainly lives up to my high expectations following The Hunt. It’s full of great action scenes, spine-tingling moments, and the protagonist is fierce!
