The capital has fallen.

The Darkling rules Ravka from his shadow throne.

Now the nation's fate rests with a broken Sun Summoner, a disgraced tracker, and the shattered remnants of a once-great magical army.

Deep in an ancient network of tunnels and caverns, a weakened Alina must submit to the dubious protection of the Apparat and the zealots who worship her as a Saint. Yet her plans lie elsewhere, with the hunt for the elusive firebird and the hope that an outlaw prince still survives.

Alina will have to forge new alliances and put aside old rivalries as she and Mal race to find the last of Morozova's amplifiers. But as she begins to unravel the Darkling's secrets, she reveals a past that will forever alter her understanding of the bond they share and the power she wields. The firebird is the one thing that stands between Ravka and destruction—and claiming it could cost Alina the very future she’s fighting for.

I’m FINALLY getting around to reviewing this book! I know, I know, I read it months ago when it was first released. What was holding me back, you ask? Well, my dears, it was the fucktacular way the series ended. I can’t remember the last time I was so disappointed by such a highly anticipated book. I’m going to be spoiling people because I’m not sure I can review this book without explaining exactly why I hated it.  Continue reading

Glorious. Epic. Irresistible. Romance.

Recc’d to me very enthusiastically by Amber and Judith. I obviously don’t learn from past mistakes >.>

Okay, so Shadow and Bone introduces us to a world in which specialised magic users, known as the Grisha, are not only the military elite but make up some of the highest social circles. Our main character, Alina Starkov, an ordinary cartographer in the army, is found through exceptional circumstances to possess the powers of a Grisha. She’s whisked off to a palace to be trained in the Grisha Arts, leaving her boring twit of a friend Mal behind. Also she falls in love with becomes dangerously attracted to my future husband The Darkling, who is so smoulderingly sexy it’s kind of a surprise the pages of the book didn’t just burn up tbh. The Darkling, apparently really old and powerful, sits at the head of the Grisha Army and in terms of political power is almost as influential as the King.

The boy and the girl had once dreamed of ships, long ago, before they’d ever seen the True Sea.

In my review of Shadow and Bone, I talked about how I had an OT3: Mal, Alina, and the Darkling. All the ship feelings, so little time. Well, now I have completely forgotten about those two idiot guys, because a new player has arrived and already won the game.

Who wants to hear about that time I was in a major reading slump and I couldn’t get out of it? I tried everything, from YA to MG to a Spartacus TV show tie-in, but nothing was working. Then Judith harassed tweeted me once again about how I should be reading Shadow and Bone. Considering I wasn’t getting into the Spartacus book, I decided that I might as well at least try this book that Judith has been going on and on and on about. So I did. And to my amazement, my cursed reading slump was broken. All thanks to Judith and Leigh Bardugo’s fabulous writing. Continue reading
