I read Emma Berquist’s debut novel, Devils Unto Dust, last year and really enjoyed it. It was the perfect Western horror. I picked up Missing, Presumed Dead quite eagerly, even though I’m kind of out of my paranormal phase.
I really enjoyed this book, although I think it could have done with a bit more world building. By that I mean there wasn’t enough information on the powers that people had. I would have loved to have learnt more about those. I think if the author had focused on that aspect more, it would have deterred from the fast paced plot, so maybe it was a good thing that she didn’t dally about.
Like I said, the plot is very fast paced. Berquist moves from point to point very quickly and efficiently. The main character, Lexi, is also very to the point, and so this format works well with her character.
I loved the relationship between Lexi and Jane. I have to say that it’s a bit strange, since Jane is dead and all, but you know, I was quick to ship a human and a werewolf once upon a time (#TeamJacob), so I can deal with a human and a ghost. Lexi and Jane’s relationship grew so organically, and I loved it even though it was over such a short period of time.
I have to say, I didn’t much care for the mystery or the reveal. I loved following the characters as they were trying to figure it out, but that’s only because I was loving the characters. The mystery wasn’t that big of a deal for me.
I’d love to see more from this world, because I think it has potential for expansion if Berquist wants to revisit it!

That’s a shame about the mystery, but it still sounds like a pretty good read overall. Great review!

I’m not much for paranormal romance but this sounds interesting. Too bad about the mystery and reveal, though at least you really enjoyed the characters!
