This month I’m participating in #ARCAugust, which is an annual event that is exactly what it sounds like. The idea is to clear your shelves and ereaders of advance readers copies and try your best to get ahead. I’ve not got too many ARCs lying around on my Kindle any more, because I’ve managed to actually show some restraint. Go me! But I do have a list to get through before the end of the year. These are the ones I’ll be trying to read this month.
I’m currently reading this one (it’s Monday at the moment) and I’m liking it. It’s a science fiction book about a bunch of teenagers who get sent to another planet by a company called Babel. They’re the ones chosen because apparently the alien race on the new planet cherishes children, and Babel need people to get onto the planet to do some mining.
The Tiger’s Daughter by K. Arsenault Rivera
All I know about this one is that the hype is insane, and it’s about two female main characters who are lesbians.
This Mortal Coil by Emily Suvada
This is another science fiction book, but this one is about a virus spreading. I love the cover!
The author of The Martian (an all time favourite of mine!) has come out with another book and I am SO EXCITED. And it’s out on my birthday!
The Dark Intercept by Julia Keller
In this book there are two Earths, New Earth and Old Earth, and that’s all I actually know.
The Lost History of Stars by Dave Boling
This is an historical novel set in South Africa. I’ve not read anything with this particular setting, so I’m looking forward to reading it!
And then there are the books that weren’t review copies, but I want to get to for various reasons. I figured I’d need something to give me a break from the stress of writing reviews and actually thinking critically, so I’ve put together a short list of must reads.
A Stranger in the House by Shari Lapena
I read Lapena’s other book, The Couple Next Door, when I was on holiday in June, and I have to say that it really surprised me. It was a really fun thriller! I’m going to get to this one ASAP.
The Long Way to a Small, Angry Planet by Becky Chambers
I’ve heard that this one is amazing, and I nabbed it when the ebook was only 99p. It’s a science fiction/space opera, and I’m really excited to see what all the fuss is about.
Three Dark Crowns by Kendare Blake
I wasn’t too fussed about reading this book, but a few people have requested it for Recaptains so I figured I would read it.
This is another one that I didn’t exactly jump at the chance to read. I read the first chapter in a bookshop recently and decided that I wanted to give it a go. I want to write a recap before the sequel, Godsgrave, comes out next month, so I need to get a move on!
The Zookeeper’s Wife by Diane Ackerman
I really want to watch the film but obviously I have to read the book first.
The Roanoke Girls by Amy Engel
This has been described as “a quiet thriller” and I’ve seen people shouting about it so I bought it. Again, it was only 99p so I won’t feel too bad if I don’t enjoy it.
